Ariz. inmates release guard, surrender

BUCKEYE, Ariz., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A two-week standoff between inmates and officials at the Arizona State Prison Complex ended Sunday with the release of the final guard being held hostage.

There was no word on the condition of the female guard or of the inmates, who surrendered to authorities, CNN reported.

The guard "will be reunited with her family," a corrections department spokeswoman told the Arizona Republic.

The standoff was one of the longest incidents of its type in U.S. history.

Two inmates from the high-security area of the prison near Buckeye, Ariz., stormed the watchtower on Jan. 18, seriously injuring a kitchen worker and taking two guards hostage. One of the hostages, a male, was released on Jan. 24 with minor injuries.

Few details have been released throughout the ordeal, but earlier Sunday officials reported one of the inmates fired rubber bullets from the tower.

No one was injured in that incident.

The prison, which houses 4,400 inmates, has been under lockdown since the ordeal began.
