100 Iranian MPs resign over election

TERHAN, Iran, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- About 100 Iranian Parliament members have resigned following a decision by the Guardian Council to disqualify thousands of national election candidates.

The BBC said Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has demanded those disqualified for election by the Guardian Council, be reinstated.

"We are all very sorry and regretful about this issue," Karroubi said. "One (political) faction lacks the support of the people. They want to gain it by force through the Guardian Council."

The Guardian Council, a 12-member un-elected body, Friday reinstated a third of the 3,600 candidates it disqualified from the Feb. 20 election.

However, reformist MPs are demanding full reinstatement.

The Guardian Council is responsible for vetting election candidates and laws. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is appointed for life and overrides all other authorities, appoints half of the council's members.
