Two powerful explosions rock Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Two powerful explosions were heard Saturday night in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and ambulances were seen rushing to the east of the city.

The explosions, which came a few seconds apart, were heard in the eastern part of Baghdad, most likely in the so-called "green area" where the presidential palace -- which has become the headquarters for the coalition forces -- is located.

The explosions came hours after several Iraqis and three American soldiers were killed in two separate attacks in Iraq.

The first attack targeted an Iraqi police station in the northern city of Mosul, while the second targeted a U.S. military patrol on the road between Tikrit and Kirkuk north of Baghdad.
