Truck spills toxic chemical in fatal crash

PAW PAW, Mich., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Michigan officials Thursday reopened a highway shut down after a truck carrying ethyl alcohol crashed, killing one and forcing scores to evacuate.

The tanker truck collided Wednesday evening with a pickup truck on snow-blown Interstate 94 in southwestern Michigan, WOOD TV reported.

There were no details available about the person killed in the crash or if other people were injured, officials said.

About 150 area residents were evacuated from the vicinity near Paw Paw, about 20 miles west of Kalamazoo.

The tanker leaked an undetermined amount of the liquid on to the expressway, but the leak was under control late Wednesday night and the evacuation and road closings were mainly a precaution, police said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Snow was falling and blowing at the time of the crash, with southwest winds 10 to 16 miles per hour and a temperature of 16, the National Weather Service said.
