Bali bomber gets life in prison

JAKARTA, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- An Islamic militant who made the bombs that killed more than 200 people in two Bali clubs has been jailed for life, the BBC reported Thursday.

Sarjiyo, 32, also known as Sawad, had faced the death penalty for the October 2002 explosion, but received a lesser sentence since he was deemed to be indirectly involved in the terror attack.

Three people have been sentenced to death for the attacks and more than 20 others handed jail sentences.

More than 200 people, mainly Australians, were killed in the attack on two crowded nightclubs.

Sarjiyo, a Christian convert to Islam, is the third man to be jailed for life over the attacks, which have been blamed on the militant Islamic network Jemaah Islamiah, which is linked to al-Qaida.

"The defendant has shown no remorse. The chemicals that he prepared were used to build the bomb that killed hundreds of people and devastated Bali," said Judge Arif Supratman.
