Report: NKorea makes arms offer to Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Nigeria says North Korea offered its missile technology and training but that the African country rejected it, the BBC reported Wednesday.

A spokesman said Nigeria wanted to develop a ballistic missile capability, but was not interested in the North Korean proposal.

Onukaba Ojo said Pyongyang officials were trying to sound out the Nigerians about a future deal, but said no agreement had been made.

The offer reportedly came during talks between Nigeria's Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his North Korean counterpart Yang Hyong-sop in Abuja.

"They came to us wanting a memorandum of understanding signed towards developing missile technology, and training and manufacture of ammunition," Ojo said. "They were just trying to get us interested."

Yang is leading a North Korean delegation on a visit to Abuja.

Ojo confirmed that Nigeria is seeking ballistic missile technology.

Nigeria has the most powerful military in Africa where it has led successful peacekeeping missions.
