ASUNCION, Paraguay, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Paraguay's president may have been the target of an assassination attempt, local news sources reported Monday.
Quoting unnamed sources, two Paraguayan newspapers reported that intelligence officials knew of six men who entered the country armed with anti-aircraft weapons and were planning to shoot down the president's plane.
President Nicanor Duarte Frutos returned to Paraguay Monday from neighboring Brazil, where he spent the last half of January vacationing at the seaside city of Guaruja. He was expected to return Sunday but waited an extra day for security to be beefed up.
Frutos has enjoyed fairly high approval -- around 60 percent -- since assuming office in April. However the Paraguayan newspaper Ultima Hora cited official sources saying that there have been recent rumors of conspiracy plots against the president.
