Scaife denied attorneys' fees

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A judges' panel Friday refused to reimburse conservative U.S. millionaire Richard Mellon Scaife for attorney fees in the Whitewater investigation.

Scaife financed the American Spectator magazine through foundations he controlled, and the magazine spent considerable resources trying to find finanical or personal improprieties by President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton in Arkansas.

At one point, allegations arose that one of the Clintons' main Arkansas accusers, David Hale, had received improper gifts from a friend, and that the gifts had been financed by a lawyer for the magazine. Congressional Democrats alleged an improper relationship between Scaife and independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who accepted, then declined to take a university chair financed by Scaife.

Scaife had sought more than $80,000 in fees resulting from his grand jury appeance, but was rejected by the same judges' panel that also refused to reimburse the Clintons and White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
