Crash of Marine chopper in SoCal kills 4

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Four U.S. Marines were reported killed Thursday night when their cargo-carrying helicopter crashed north of San Diego, Calif.

The 1970s-vintage UH-1 Huey was on a training mission at Camp Pendleton when it went down at around 7 p.m. local time.

Officials at Camp Pendleton said Friday that three of the four Marines aboard the aircraft were found dead at the scene. The fourth died shortly after arrival at an Orange County hospital.

Additional details of the crash were not immediately available. Camp Pendleton is the home of the next Marine units scheduled for rotation into Iraq.
