WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- LaVerne Harris Stevenson, an award-winning journalist who challenged the roles of women in 1950s newspapers, died Friday of lung disease in North Carolina. She was 76.

Stevenson also was the wife of H.L. Stevenson, former UPI editor in chief and vice president. He died in 1995.

Chronicling crime, politics and investigative series under the byline "Bunny Harris" for The Charlotte Observer and Raleigh Times in North Carolina, Mrs. Stevenson bucked beliefs of what women reporters could -- and should -- write about.

For her efforts, she was awarded top prizes by the North Carolina Press Association in the mid-1950s.

Her career, bookends to a marriage and family, spanned 25 years of newspapers and magazines. In the 1980s, she became a specialist in medical writing, covering AIDS, diabetes, cardiology and microbiology.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer L. Stevenson of Winston-Salem; her mother, Myrtle Lovelace Harris of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Doris Harris of Riverside, Calif., and Marlene Harris Page of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three nieces and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held Monday at Voglers Funeral Home in Winston-Salem at 7 p.m.
