ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney told conservative activists Thursday terrorists "continue to plot against America and the civilized world."

In a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, Cheney said the United States must defeat terrorism at home and overseas.

"Terrorists continue to plot against America and the civilized world," the vice president told the crowd. "In the war on terror we have only one option: We must take the fight to them."

Cheney used his speech to restate the need for reauthorization of the Patriot Act, parts of which are set to expire this year. His remarks echoed the president's call for quick congressional action in Tuesday's State of the Union address.

A number of leading conservatives, including American Conservative Union Chairman David Keene, whose group is a principal sponsor of the conference, have been outspoken in their criticism of parts of the Patriot Act.
