GREENVILLE, S.C., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Fresh from his surprise second-place finish in Iowa, Sen. John Edwards made a quick visit to South Carolina Wednesday before going to New Hampshire.

Edwards, hoping to be the Democratic nominee for president, held a rally of about 150 in Greenville, S.C., and picked up the endorsement of Ike Williams, the chief of staff to Rep. James E. Clyburn, a Democrat.

Williams is an influential black leader in a state where black voters can make up to 40 percent of the primary turnout.

However, all the Democrats seeking the nomination were courting Clyburn, who had endorsed Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt. Since Gephardt dropped out of the race, Clyburn has remained undecided, the New York Times reported.

Edwards, who lives in North Carolina, was born in South Carolina and still has family there and considers South Carolina a "must-win" state to keep his candidacy alive.
