Clock ticking in NATO hunt for Karadjic

PALE, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- There is a possibility fugitive Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadjic could evade war crimes prosecution if NATO can't capture him by the end of the year.

The NATO mission in Bosnia expires at the end of the year, which has caused concern among British NATO officials, the Times of London reported Tuesday.

They said unless a new and concerted effort is made to apprehend the war crimes suspect, he and Gen. Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander, may never be held accountable for the worst atrocities in Europe since World War II.

Karadjic and Mladic have been in hiding for eight years.

Earlier this month, Italian, U.S. and other NATO forces conducted a three-day sweep search of Karadjic's home town Pale, where his home was searched and relatives interrogated.

Monday, black and white posters of the grey-haired former psychiatrist appeared in Pale above the slogan: "Always with you."
