12 die in Yemen tribal fighting

SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Two days of tribal fighting in Yemen has left 12 people dead Sunday after the authorities failed to end the clashes outside the capital, Sana'a.

Local official sources said that among those killed were two women and two children.

They said the fighting that erupted Saturday among three different tribes in the Emran province, north of the capital, continued throughout Sunday.

The sources added that automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades were used, during which an unknown number of people have also been injured.

They said the government and security authorities have been unable to avert or stop the armed clashes.

The Yemeni tribes often resort to settling old scores themselves in the absence of a strong government presence in the tribal regions, where it is estimated that at least 60 million guns and other weapons are in the possession of tribal members.
