PHOENIX, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The panel that determines Arizona's legislative district boundaries was considering what to do Saturday about a judge's rejection of their proposed map.
A Maricopa County judge ruled Friday that the proposed map submitted by the Independent Redistricting Commission was not competitive enough and gave the panel 45 days to make changes.
Commission officials told the Arizona Republic they were considering an appeal. They warned that any additional changes would have to also pass muster from the federal Justice Department, which wants to make sure that the voting power of minority communities isn't diluted.
The Republic said the commission's proposed changes to districts around Phoenix and Tucson could give the Democrats a good chance of overcoming the current Republican majority in the State Senate.
