Moroccan bakers strike for more bread

RABAT, Morocco, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Flat prices for bread have prompted a nationwide strike by bakers across Morocco.

Bread shortages were already being reported Thursday, only 48 hours into the action against the government's refusal to raise bread prices, the BBC said.

A bread price hike would be the first increase in 14 years.

Riots broke out in major cities during a bakers' strike in 1983, but the BBC said that is not likely to happen this time because most Moroccans appear to support the government.

The bakers claim the price of bread has not kept up with the rising cost of flour.
