U.N. Security Council wants to meet Iraqis

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Members of the U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to invite the head of the Iraqi Governing Council to brief them on Jan. 19.

The president of the Security Council for January, Chile's Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, told reporters the panel of 15 invited the Iraqi council's January president, Adnan Pachachi, and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to brief them after their meeting with representatives of the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority, the occupying power in Iraq.

The Security Council's invitation to Pachachi followed a letter from the Iraqi Minister of Planning and Development Cooperation, Mehdi al-Hafidh, requesting a meeting, Munoz said, adding he had spoken to Annan, who would be available for the private council session.

"At that time we'll have a discussion on the future of Iraq and the present situation," said the Security Council president. "We'll be happy to listen to them.

"It would be nice to hear his assessment of how things are going in Iraq, how they are viewing the political process, what role they perceive the United Nations can play and what role the Security Council can play in the future of Iraq," Munoz said.
