Poll: People want more funding for NCLB

WASHINGTON, Fla., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Americans believe the federal government should be spending more on the nation's schools, and changes should be made in the No Child Left Behind Act.

The National Education Association said in Washington Wednesday a poll by the Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinland Research and the Republican polling firm The Tarrance Group indicates 63 percent of the respondents say the federal government should be spending more.

It also showed support for the No Child Left Behind Act, known as NCLB, but respondents believe it needs more flexibility.

"Most Americans fully support the goals of the law -- high standards, accountability for all, but the belief that no child should be left behind regardless of their background or abilities," said Reg Weaver, president of the NEA, which has opposed NCLB from the beginning.

But the U.S. Department of Education said the law has plenty of flexibility, mostly contributed by input from the states.
