Mikulski has wide lead over unknown rival

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., leads her only announced Republican opponent by 43 points in the latest Baltimore Sun poll.

Mikulski, who is seeking her fourth term in the U.S. Senate has a substantial 65 percent to 22 percent lead over little-known GOP state Sen. E.J. Pipkin among the 1,200 likely voters surveyed.

Hoping to build his name recognition, Pipkin recently kicked off a statewide radio campaign to introduce himself to Maryland voters. The spot, which does not mention Mikulski, runs on two-dozen radio stations throughout the state.

Mikulski last won re-election in 1998 with 71 percent of the vote. Former Vice President Al Gore carried Maryland in the 2000 presidential election, winning 57 percent of the more than 2 million votes cast.
