PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- South African President Thabo Mbeki was taken to the hospital for breathing problems at opening of the African National Congress in Pietermaritzburg.
"The doctor determined that he had an allergy to what he had eaten, (Sunday)," Mbeki's spokesman Bheki Khumalo said, adding that Mbeki flew back to the capital, Pretoria, as scheduled late Sunday, where he had a further medical examination.
Mbeki is scheduled to travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday.
A joint statement from the presidency and the South African surgeon general confirmed the 61-year-old president had taken ill, but reassured the nation the Mbeki had recovered.
It was not clear what Mbeki had eaten that could have made him ill; but the ANC celebrated its 92nd anniversary Sunday with a giant cake, sporting the party's black, yellow and white colors, with a smiling Mbeki presiding over the cake cutting ceremony and posing for the cameras, reported allAfrica.com.
The president delivered a 45-minute speech outlining the ANC's political manifesto and the party's record since the last elections in 1999.
