17-year-olds can vote in Michigan caucuses

DETROIT, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Thousands of Michigan 17-year-olds are eligible to vote in the Feb. 7 Democratic caucuses, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday.

And that's just fine with the presidential contenders who are working hard to win as many as possible of the 100,000-plus votes of Michigan teenagers who will turn 18 before the Nov. 2 general election.

The catch is eligible teens have to do it the retro way, by actually showing up in person at one of the 576 statewide caucus sites.

Even though the Michigan Democratic Party is pioneering Internet caucus voting, the cyberspace method is available only to registered voters 18 and over who fill out an application by Jan. 31.

Democratic party officials say 17-year-old voters need to show up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a caucus site, show ID, sign a declaration that they're a Democrat and that they intend to register to vote in time for the Nov. 2 election.
