Canadian cold snap takes more lives

ALMA, Quebec, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- A cold snap in eastern Canada that pushed temperatures to minus 46 has claimed the life of an elderly Quebec woman, it was reported Saturday.

Also Friday, a Halifax woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being found unconscious in a parked car, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

At least seven deaths have been blamed on cold weather.

The 93-year-old Quebec woman was found in front of a seniors' home. She was believed to have been confused.

It is the continuation of the bitter cold that hit Western Canada last weekend. The freezing weather has now enveloped an area from Ontario to Prince Edward Island. In Quebec, the mercury has dropped as low as minus 46 degrees.

Environment Canada's Dave Phillips warned Canadians the worst could be yet to come.

"We certainly haven't reached the dead of winter yet," he told the CBC. "That glorious moment when we can say there's more winter behind us than ahead of us."
