Poll: Bush popular with Calif. Latinos

WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- President George Bush enjoys a 65 percent approval rating among California Latinos likely to vote in the fall election, a new poll by PRM Consulting says.

The survey also found 74 percent give Bush high marks in the conduct of the war against global terrorism.

"This support, coupled with the strong Latino support that Republican candidates received in the recall election against a strong Latino Democrat, seems to be a strong sign that Republican outreach efforts and the president's own efforts have gone a long way in cracking the strong Democrat base within the Latino Community," PRM Consulting's Richard Babcock said Friday.

Locally, the survey found that 58 percent of Latinos had an optimistic view about the direction California was taking under new Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger while only 34 percent said the state was going in the wrong direction.

PRM Consulting is a California based demographic, survey and research firm. Its findings were compiled out of more than 1,300 telephone interviews conducted Jan. 2-4, 2004, in both Spanish and English. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percent.
