EVANSTON, Ill., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who wants approval of importation of prescription drugs from Canada, signed up seniors for a new state drug discount club.
He told about 300 seniors gathered at the Levy Senior Center in Evanston their $25 a year membership fee would help the state negotiate an average 20 percent price break on prescription medications.
"Before this was a federal issue. It wasn't up to the states," said the Democratic governor. "Well, we are working with the federal government, but we're not waiting. We're taking our own destiny into our own hands."
About 2 million seniors and disabled Illinoisans and state employees are eligible for the card. Ohio began offering a similar prescription drug discount card Jan. 1.
"We have talked to other states and we are continuing to talk to other states," said Scott McKibbin, special advocate for prescription drugs.
Blagojevich and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will co-host a summit on prescription drugs at the National Governors Conference Winter Meeting in Washington, Feb. 24.
