UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Monday praised the leaders of India and Pakistan for progress being made toward improved relations.
"I think it is wonderful news, what is coming out of Islamabad, (Pakistan) and I am extremely happy that the talks are taking place," Annan said, adding that he hopes India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf "will find the statesmanship and the leadership and the wisdom to move the process forward."
India and Pakistan earlier announced agreement in Islamabad Tuesday to start talks next month on all divisive issues including Kashmir, the disputed territory they claim.
The secretary-general said "improved relations between the two countries would mean a lot for the region, not just in terms reducing political tensions, but also in economic and social terms, and it would be beneficial to all the smaller countries in the region."
He said, "I am really excited with the developments, and I applaud the two leaders for the actions that they have taken."
