Jewish lobby accuses EU of anti-Semitism

BRUSSELS, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Two of the world's most prominent Jewish leaders have accused the European Commission of anti-Semitism.

In an op-ed piece in the Financial Times newspaper Monday, Edgar M. Bronfman and Cobi Benatoff, respectively presidents of the World Jewish Congress and the European Jewish Congress, wrote: "Anti-Semitism can be expressed in two ways: by action and inaction. Remarkably, the European Commission is guilty of both."

The Jewish lobby is angry at the EU executive for publishing an opinion poll showing Israel to be the greatest threat to world peace and for suppressing an internal report linking Muslim groups to anti-Semitic attacks.

The authors of the article described the commission's actions as "politically motivated" and "demonstrating a failure of will and decency."

The Brussels-based executive, which is due to host a high-level conference aimed at combating anti-Semitism in February, denied the accusations.
