NEW DELHI, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee says a good beginning could be made in improving India-Pakistan relations at next month's scheduled summit.
"Pakistan's conduct in the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit starting in Islamabad early next month will only show whether it wants to improve its relations with India," Vajpayee said in an interview to Dainik Jagran Hindi daily.
Vajpayee plans to attend the four-day summit, which begins Jan. 4.
Vajpayee said though some progress has been made in relations between the two nuclear powers, "the basic question is whether Pakistan is prepared to give up its attitude of enmity towards India. If yes, a good beginning can be made to improve the ties from the SAARC summit," Press Trust of India reported.
Vajpayee said the best barometer on the question will be whether trade grows between the two nations.
