Report: Libya was enriching uranium

WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- World Tribune.com reports U.S. and British specialists found Libya was enriching uranium before it agreed to give up its weapons program.

The discovery came as negotiations were under way that resulted in last week's agreement by Libya to abandon its weapons of mass destruction program. The Web site said intelligence analysts were stunned because they had long believed Libya did not have the technological infrastructure to support a nuclear weapons program.

The inspectors also found Libya had Scud C missiles, which it had obtained from North Korea. The missiles have a range of 500 kilometers (313 miles).

World Tribune.com said U.S. and British experts found uranium enrichment activity at 10 sites in Libya during visits in October and December.

Last week, Libya promised to dismantle its weapons program and destroy missiles with a range of more than 300 kilometers (188 miles) and a payload of more than 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds).
