Bomb blast hits U.N. Kabul compound

KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A bomb explosion Thursday destroyed the wall of a U.N. compound in the Afghan capital of Kabul, the BBC reported.

There were no casualties in the blast, which happened at about 5 a.m. local time close to the presidential palace, Afghan police said.

The blast followed several rocket attacks on Kabul over the past week, all blamed on Taliban militants.

The blast happened in a residential area, several miles from Kabul University, where the Afghan grand assembly, or loya jirga, continues to debate the new constitution.

It was the third blast in the capital since the meeting began 10 days ago. Authorities say Taliban insurgents might be trying to disrupt the assembly.

The loya jirga is expected to ratify the constitution, paving the way for national elections next year.
