OKLAHOMA CITY, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The mistaken identification of a dead Oklahoma prison inmate led to the wrong family being notified.
The family of Kevin B. Wyckoff, 23, was told he was dead but within hours of his funeral Monday he called home from the prison, the Daily Oklahoman reported Wednesday.
Prison officials now believe the dead inmate was Steven L. Howe, 34, who hanged himself Friday at the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center, the Oklahoman reported. The confusion apparently resulted when the men switched cells.
When the body was found, prison officials believed it was Wyckoff because paperwork showed the cell was his. An open casket funeral was held Monday in Gore, Okla., but the family was unaware of the mistake until Wyckoff called from prison.
"We started checking and determined the same evening that we had identified the deceased incorrectly," Corrections Department spokesman Jerry Massie told the Oklahoman.
Massie said investigators learned Wyckoff and Howe, who were similar in appearance, switched cells after arriving at Lexington to await transfers to other prisons.
