NAGOYA, Japan, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Japanese police have detained a former banker who wanted to share a stock windfall by throwing cash from a Nagoya skyscraper, Mainichi reported Wednesday.
The unidentified 26-year-old said he made a lot of money earlier this month and he "wanted to give it back to the general public."
The cash fluttering from the building caused chaos on the street, and an employee asked him to stop, the newspaper said.
The man insisted he was doing nothing wrong, but police arrived and took him for questioning.
They said he had scattered 9,300 U.S. dollar bills as well as some Japanese yen.
About 1,000 one-dollar bills, which passersby collected and handed over to police, were returned to the man.
The former banker told the newspaper he had made money after buying 6 million stocks in Ashigin Financial Group when their prices were at one yen one U.S. cent)and five yen following the failure of its main bank, Ashikaga Bank.
"I sold the stocks when their prices rose to some 15 yen (14 U.S. cents)," he said.
