ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- A U.S. Coast Guard unit rescued three crewmen from a fishing vessel that caught fire Wednesday 30 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey.
The Coast Guard Cutter Ibis, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Cape May, N.J. responded to the fishing vessel Siddie Goldens request for a tow as its sister ship, the Tamara Lane, followed behind, Coast Guard officials said.
During the tow, the crew from the IBIS noticed that the Tamara Lane, a 69-foot scalloper out of Lowland, N.C., was on fire.
The Ibis immediately broke tow and responded to the fire. By
the time the Ibis reached the Tamara Lane, the ship was fully engulfed in flames and two members of the crew were rescued from the water.
After launching two parachute flares, the third member of the crew was pulled to safety by those on the Ibis.
