S. Korea campaign funding scandal grows

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- South Korea's president says his election campaign team used about $30 million in legal and illegal funds last year, the Korea Times reported Friday.

"We registered between $22 million to $24 million in legal campaign funds during the electioneering," he said.

Roh's statement, which included the admission that his election campaign fund last year used about $30 million, is expected to have significant consequences. He earlier promised to resign as head of state if his camp received more than one-tenth the illegal donations that the Grand National Party raised.

In response, the Millennium Democratic Party said that Roh's statement was tantamount to an admission to using illegal funds.

The GNP said should Roh's disclosure prove to be true, it could constitute the grounds to declare his presidency null and void under present election laws.

The prosecution has so far uncovered about $42 million in illegal funds collected by the GNP.
