WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- President Bush announced late Friday Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has agreed to destroy the African country's weapons of mass destruction.
Bush held the development up as an example of the United States' success in the war on terror following the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"Over the last two years, a great coalition of nations has come together to oppose terror and to oppose the spread of weapons of mass destruction," the president said.
"And when leaders make the wise and responsible choice, when they renounce terror and weapons of mass destruction, as Colonel Gadhafi has now done, they serve the interest of their own people and they add to the security of all nations."
The agreement came after nine months of discussions among Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Gadhafi, the president said.
Blair made a similar speech from Britain Friday.
