Slasher injures two children in Japan

UJI, Japan, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A man armed with a knife burst into a Japanese elementary school Thursday and slashed two children before teachers apprehended him.

The children received only minor injuries, the Mainichi Daily News reported.

Police said the man, who appeared to about 35 years in age, stormed into a second-floor classroom at Uji Municipal Elementary School in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, at 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, and slashed two children with a knife.

Two 7-year-old boys were injured in the attack. They were taken to a hospital next to the elementary school, but both of them reportedly suffered only light injuries.

The school's vice principal and two teachers raced to the scene and apprehended the attacker, before handing him over to police.

Investigators said the man told them he had attended a psychiatric hospital. When he stormed into the school witnesses said he was brandishing the knife and making meaningless statements.
