SEOUL, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- South Korea has reported its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, a type of contagious bird flu that can prove fatal for humans.

The Korea Times said South Korea's National Institute of Health said the flu outbreak was found on a chicken farm in Umsong, North Chungchong Province.HP avian flue killed six people in Hong Kong in 1997 and another one this year.

Authorities said it is not yet clear if the influenza discovered in Umsong can infect humans. The Times said officials are conducting tests to check whether the genetic sequence of the virus matches the lethal one discovered in Hong Kong.

Test results are expected next month.
