Powell undergoes surgery

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell is undergoing surgery Monday for prostrate cancer at Walter Reed Army Medical in Washington.

"He will be there for several days before he returns home," said state Department spokesman Richard Boucher.

The 66-year old secretary will be "on a reduced schedule" while he recovers the operation, the spokesman added.

Earlier the department's deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said the surgery had been scheduled for some time but called it a "routine intervention."
