Defense rests in Va. sniper trial

CHESAPEAKE, Va., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The defense rested Monday in the murder trial of a teenager accused of taking part in a series of sniper-style killings in the Washington area last year.

John Boyd Malvo, 18, is on trial for the killing for a former FBI analyst. According to the Washington Post's Web site, the prosecution opened its case with testimony from a psychologist who said Malvo knew right from wrong when the killings took place.

The final defense witnesses -- two forensic psychiatrists -- said Malvo was legally insane during the killings because he had been brainwashed by John Allen Muhammad, 42, who has been convicted and sentenced to death in another of the sniper shootings.

Malvo is charged with capital murder in the killing of FBI analyst Linda Franklin, who was shot on Oct. 14, 2002. Malvo has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity.

Malvo and Muhammad are suspected of having carried out a series of shootings in the fall of 2002 in which 10 people were killed.
