Egypt: Syria seeks peace talks with Israel

CAIRO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Sunday he told President George W. Bush that Syria was seeking to resume peace talks with Israel over the Golan Heights.

He told reporters in Cairo that Syrian President Bashar Assad "wants to sit at the negotiating table to resolve" the issue of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967.

Mubarak's remarks came a day after Bush endorsed a Congressional bill that threatened U.S. sanctions against Syria.

But the Egyptian president said he did not believe the U.S. administration would use the law against Damascus.

Mubarak also urged the Palestinians and Israelis to resume their peace talks that have been frozen for more than two years.

Calling on both sides not to set preconditions for the resumption of the negotiations, he said the Palestinians and Israelis "should work together, because one hand cannot clap."
