U.N. condemns terrorist attacks in Iraq

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- U.N. Security Council members Monday condemned terrorist attacks in Iraq last month against Colombian, Iraqi, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Korean personnel.

"Members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the repeated attacks in Iraq on foreign and Iraqi nationals and international and coalition personnel," said Ambassador Stefan Tafrov of Bulgaria, this month's president of the council.

He said they "express their deepest sympathy and condolences to the peoples and authorities concerned and to all the victims of the attacks and their families.

"Members of the council urge all states to fully cooperate in the efforts to find and bring to justice the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of these attacks," he added.

The Japanese mission to the United Nations applauded the statement, noting the Nov. 29 killing of two Japanese diplomats who were on their way to a meeting on the reconstruction of northern Iraq.

Terrorists in Iraq claimed an unusually large number of civilian lives in a wide array of attacks targeting various nationalities including coalition members.
