Most Floridians oppose Schiavo law

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A poll published Sunday says 65 percent of Florida voters oppose a law enacted to keep a brain-damaged Tampa woman alive over the objections of her husband.

Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida Legislature had bypassed court orders and passed the law forcing a feeding tube back into Terri Schiavo.

Her husband had just won a long-running court fight to have the tube removed, saying his wife, in a vegetative state for 14 years, would not have wanted to live that way.

The St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald poll said opponents of the law cut across party lines, religious affiliation, age groups, income levels and most ethnic groups.

"The governor clearly is in the wrong in terms of public opinion," pollster Rob Schroth said. "Two-thirds of voters disagree with the policy, and 75 percent of voters think that these types of decisions should be made by the spouse."
