Nepal kills 50 rebels in gunfight

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Nepalese troops gunned down 50 rebels in a firefight that also left six soldiers dead in southwestern Nepal, the Press Trust of India reported Wednesday.

The 50 rebels were killed by a joint team of security forces at Pandong area of Kailali district west of Kathmandu, as the troops launched an operation against Maoists in their training center at the district, state-run Radio Nepal quoted security sources as saying.

The deaths came as 16 more guerrillas were killed in separate encounters in the kingdom.
