Hundreds feared dead in Congo ferry wreck

INONGO, Republic of the Congo, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- The search continued Thursday for more than 100 people missing after a ferry sank in stormy weather near Inongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The bodies of 160 victims had been recovered from Lake Mayi Ndombe near Inongo since the ferry went down on Tuesday, the BBC reported.

The ferry, Dieu Merci (Thank God), capsized in the middle of the lake with 290 people aboard, the BBC said.

It was the second major transport accident in the Congo in two days.

A train hit a landslide and plunged into a river near the western town of Matadi Wednesday. One person was known dead and at least 10 others were still missing Thursday, the BBC said.

It usually takes days for news of accidents to reach officials in the capital of Kinshasa because of the country's poor communications system, the BBC said.
