Worldwide Anglican Communion in turmoil

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The world's second largest Anglican church cut ties with the U.S. Episcopal Church just days after Africa's largest Anglican church acted similarly.

Uganda's Anglicans, known as the Church of Uganda, severed ties earlier this week with the Episcopal Church of the United States of America over the elevation of an openly gay man as bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire earlier this year.

Just four days before the Church of Uganda's actions, the Church of Nigeria met in Port Harcourt to cut ties with the New Hampshire diocese, though not with the entire American Episcopal Church.

Such an action is under active consideration, not only in Nigeria, home to 17.5 million Anglicans, but in numerous Anglican churches in Africa and Asia, where the majority of the world's Anglicans live.

Anglicans in the United States are known as Episcopalians.

Worldwide, the Anglican Communion includes nearly 80 million Christians.
