Jordan to give Gazans passports

AMMAN, Jordan, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Jordan's government announced Sunday it will provide temporary passports to Palestinians from Gaza residing in Jordan, but not citizenship.

Spokeswoman Asma Khader told United Press International there were some Gazans who have temporary Jordanian passports.

She added, "there is an intention towards granting all the Gazans in Jordan with passports to provide them with more facilities."

Jordan, where more than half of the population are originally Palestinians, has granted citizenship to Palestinians who fled in the 1948 Middle East war when the state of Israel was created, and to those who sought refuge in 1967 when Israel captured the West Bank, which was under Jordan's control at the time.

But Palestinians from Gaza have not been given this privilege, although an estimated 300,000 Gazans are believed to be living in this Arab kingdom. They are not allowed to work in government departments and their children are forbidden to study in government schools except with special permission.
