Govt. issues new al-Qaida warning

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. government warns al-Qaida might soon attack "U.S. interests" once again, this time overseas, CNN reports.

After receiving an alert from intelligence officials, the government planned to send an advisory to state and local law enforcement agencies.

The warning will be about "al-Qaida's continued desire to plot or plan terrorist attacks with an emphasis on U.S. interests abroad," officials said.

Law enforcement officials said they understand there will be no change in the nation's color-coded threat level, which is at 'yellow', signifying an elevated risk of terrorist attack.

A senior U.S. official told CNN that because of the recent attacks in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and increased "chatter" among potential terrorists, the warning "was inevitable."

The official said there is particular concern about the remaining days of Ramadan, which will end around the world Tuesday and Wednesday.

Separately, a new U.N. report identifies a shifting of al-Qaida's strategy toward "softer," nonmilitary targets, and warned the group was working toward a biological or chemical attack.
