Arrests made in Istanbul bombings

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Turkey's foreign minister announced Friday several arrests had been made in the deadly bomb attacks in Istanbul.

Abdullah Gul confirmed there had been "some arrests" but declined to specify the exact number of people involved or whether the bombers had been identified, London's Financial Times said.

The Turkish daily Hurriyet reported police had arrested seven people in the attacks, which struck just as British Prime Minister Tony Blair met President George Bush in London to discuss international terrorism.

Quoting police sources, the newspaper said the bombers who drove the truck bombs had been identified as two Turkish men who had recently returned from Dubai. One of the bombers was believed to be a school friend of one of the suspects involved in last Saturday's bombings of two synagogues in the city, which left 25 dead.

Thursday's attacks devastated the British consulate and the Turkish headquarters of London-based HSBC bank, killing 27 people and injuring more than 400.
