Colombian leftist rebels blow up pipeline

BOGOTA, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Leftist Colombian rebels have blown up several stretches of a state-owned oil pipeline and a bridge, Colombian military sources said Thursday.

The EFE news agency said the attacks occurred as army troops were advancing on guerrillas of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces, the group blamed for dynamiting the structures.

According to the officials, the pipeline belonging to the government-owned ECOPETROL oil company was blown up at several points, interrupting the flow of 5,000 barrels a day to a Pacific port for export.

The attack on the bridge over the Guames River cut vehicular traffic between the city of Mocoa and the town of San Miguel situated on the border with Ecuador.

Left-wing rebel groups in Colombia have been fighting the central government for almost 40 years.
