Amnesty: Egypt still torturing prisoners

LONDON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Amnesty International again Thursday criticized Egypt's human rights record, saying at least seven people were tortured to death in that nation last year.

A report by the human rights group says torture in Egyptian detention centers remains widespread and systematic, with refugees and people held because of their sexual orientation most at risk for torture.

The London-headquartered Amnesty said the torture can include electric shocks and beatings, as well as suspending detainees by their wrists or ankles.

The BBC reported that earlier this month another group, Human Rights Watch, called on Egypt to investigate the alleged mistreatment and torture of people who protested against the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
