Uganda rebels kill 12 people

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Lord's Resistance Army rebels in Uganda reportedly bludgeoned 12 people to death Tuesday, including nine abducted children being moved to another camp.

The U.N. Integrated Regional Information Networks said the attacks followed LRA operations last week in which as many as 300,000 people were forced to flee their homes in Lira, in the north-central section of the country.

Uganda army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza told IRIN: "They came and killed three local youths and then turned their weapons on the nine abductees they had captive. All were killed by bashing them to death."

The latest LRA killings occurred as local government officials said they were overwhelmed by the massive increase in displaced people since the rebel group stepped up its campaign.

Army sources said some LRA rebels are trapped in Lira and are taking out their wrath on the civilian population.
